Name: Leslie Fierro, Writers Cast Off
From: California, originally, but I’ve been here a baker’s dozen of years, so I usually say, “New York” when traveling.
Job: Writer, Teaching Artist, Writing Tutor, Workshop Leader
Tell us more about what you do!
I lead creative writing workshops at the Jalopy Theater in Brooklyn (and sometimes abroad), and I do writing consulting and tutoring for adults and kids (hopefully bringing that work to Prosper soon!) More on that at WritersCastOff.com. Twice a week I work as a teaching artist with Global Writes, working with fourth and fifth graders on literacy through game design. I’m also a folk and old-time music enthusiast with a dirty past in publicity work, so I’ll be working on publicity for this year’s Brooklyn Folk Fest.
Here’s what a typical day in your life looks like:
Up at 6:30, often pushing is to 7 which is always a shitshow, making my kid’s lunch and shoving breakfast at him as I wrangle him to Pre-K, then off to Prosper (ideally) to work on work (and sometimes on my novel). Go pick up my kid at 5, throw some dinner together, kid to bed, me binge watching something while drawing, cutting, coloring and/or pasting something for the game design class.
What is the best thing about being your own boss (or working remotely)?
Not really caring what I put on or if I’ve adequately brushed my hair.
What’s the worst?
Not really caring what I put on or if I’ve adequately brushed my hair.
Where did you work before you discovered Prosper?
Home.
Which is your favorite spot to work in Prosper’s Bushwick space?
Whichever green room is open. Why are they ever open? I feel like an office queen when I get into one, which is almost always.
What does the word “Gowork” mean to you?
Go. Work. Aka, don’t sit around your house thinking of new snacks to make or what to clean.
What do you hope to achieve in 2018?
Getting more remote clients for editing, finishing that novel, and helping people write better.
